The Government has introduced a five-month moratorium as it works towards establishing a formal regulatory framework for Zimbabwe’s growing e-hailing industry.
The move comes as authorities seek to address challenges affecting operators while recognising the role played by platforms such as Bolt and InDrive in providing affordable transport options and creating employment opportunities.
During the moratorium period, e-hailing operators and drivers are expected to put in place safety and operational measures as consultations on the sector continue.
The Government has also directed businesses operating in the industry to ensure they are properly registered for tax purposes with the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA).
Following the five-month period, the Ministry of Transport is expected to introduce a permanent regulatory framework informed by international practices.
The regulations are intended to improve safety, accountability and reliability within the e-hailing sector while ensuring that passengers continue to have access to affordable transport services.
The development is expected to provide greater clarity for e-hailing companies and drivers, who have been operating in an increasingly important segment of Zimbabwe’s urban transport system.
