Bulawayo Set to Host First-Ever Cimas @80 Media Awards Tonight

Cimas Health Group says preparations are complete for the inaugural Cimas @80 Media Awards, which take place tonight at Cresta Churchill Hotel in Bulawayo as part of the organisation’s 80th anniversary celebrations.

Launched in September with support from the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ), the awards honour journalists who have demonstrated excellence in reporting on health, wellness, and medical innovation. The programme is running under the theme “Celebrating 80 Years of Transforming Lives.”

This year’s competition drew strong interest, with 120 entries submitted across four categories—Healthcare Transformation, Health and Wellness, Excellence in Medical Innovation, and Public Health Awareness. Eligible stories were published between September 12 and October 31.

Cimas Health Group Chief Executive Officer Vuli Ndlovu applauded journalists for their continued commitment to promoting health literacy and highlighting issues that affect communities.

“As we celebrate 80 years of Cimas Medical Aid Society’s service to the nation, we are honoured to recognise journalists who continue to tell powerful, life-changing health stories,” he said. He added that the high number of submissions shows the media’s growing interest in ethical, factual health reporting.

Ndlovu said the awards are part of Cimas’ broader investment in strengthening journalism and building healthier communities through accurate information.

“For us, this ceremony reflects not only a celebration of outstanding work, but also our long-term commitment to empowering ethical health journalism in Zimbabwe,” he noted.

Cimas has been supporting media excellence for years, including sponsoring the Health Reporter of the Year Award at the National Journalism and Media Awards (NJAMA) in partnership with ZUJ.

Tonight’s ceremony is expected to bring together media practitioners, health experts, and industry stakeholders for a celebration of storytelling that shapes public health awareness.
