Former Bikita West Member of Parliament and former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe adviser Dr Munyaradzi Kereke has died in Harare.
Kereke died this morning at Avenues Clinic, where he had been receiving treatment after suffering a stroke.
The banker-turned-politician first gained prominence in Zimbabwe’s financial sector before joining the RBZ during Gideon Gono’s tenure as governor. His relationship with Gono later deteriorated, marking a major turning point in his career.
Kereke subsequently ventured into politics and secured the Bikita West parliamentary seat under Zanu PF in the 2013 harmonised elections.
His public career was later dominated by legal battles. He faced fraud-related allegations and was separately convicted over the rape of a minor relative. In 2024, the Supreme Court upheld his conviction, resulting in an effective 10-year prison term.
He had been out on bail while pursuing his appeal but was taken back into custody following the Supreme Court ruling.
Kereke was later released from prison and subsequently suffered a stroke.
He was a prominent figure in Zimbabwe’s banking and political circles, although his career was ultimately marked by significant controversy.
