ISSUES around road traffic accidents dominated debate during the National Assembly’s Question and Answer session in Mt Hampden this Wednesday.
Following the tragic death of 17 people in a road traffic accident along Harare-Seke Road in Chitungwiza this Tuesday, parliamentarians sought clarity on the measures the government is taking to ensure public safety.
In response, Acting Leader of Government Business in the August House, Dr Anxious Masuka, outlined several interventions including the proposed Road Traffic Accident Fund, while the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Honourable Felix Mhona clarified that several road rehabilitation projects are on course.
“We have directed all the council Chief Executive Officers and Chairpersons to give us all their requirements for the road construction or maintenance so that we can assist. The programme is still on-going,” Minister Mhona said.
Parliamentarians also raised concerns over delays in disbursement of Constituency Development Funds, saying it is weighing down community development.
“We are promising that those who haven’t received their funds will get them in the next batch. We are in discussion with the Chief Whip to expedite the distribution,” responded the Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion, Professor Mthuli Ncube.
The Constituency Development Fund is designed to support projects that benefit communities, and these include infrastructure development in various constituencies. ZBC
