Cimas Bets on Local Innovation to Transform Healthcare as Healthathon 3.0 Launches

Cimas Health Group has reaffirmed its commitment to driving healthcare transformation through technology and innovation following the launch of the Cimas Healthathon 3.0, a national digital health innovation challenge aimed at developing solutions for Zimbabwe’s evolving healthcare needs.

Speaking at the launch, Cimas Health Group Chief Executive Officer Vuli Ndlovu said the organisation views innovation as a critical enabler in addressing persistent healthcare challenges and building a more efficient, accessible and patient-centred healthcare system.

Ndlovu said the annual Healthathon initiative reflects Cimas’ commitment to harnessing local talent and technological innovation to tackle issues affecting healthcare delivery across the country.

“Through the Healthathon challenge, we are demonstrating our commitment to addressing some of the complex and evolving challenges facing our country’s healthcare sector, including affordability constraints, limited access to healthcare services, fragmented data systems, delayed service delivery, low preventive healthcare engagement, operational inefficiencies and rising healthcare costs,” he said.

The third edition of the competition will run under the theme “Reimagining Healthcare Through Disruptive Innovation” and is expected to attract startups, innovation hubs, university technology teams and independent innovators from across Zimbabwe.

Ndlovu said the challenge has become an important platform for crowdsourcing innovative ideas that align with Cimas Health Group’s digital transformation agenda and its purpose of inspiring healthier communities.

“The Cimas Healthathon is not merely a competition. It is a journey of creativity, collaboration and innovation that brings together some of the country’s brightest minds to develop bold and technologically advanced solutions to pressing healthcare challenges,” he said.

Registration for the competition will open on June 22 and close on July 12, with participants expected to submit solutions capable of improving healthcare access, affordability, prevention, wellness, operational efficiency, data intelligence and patient experience.

In a departure from previous editions, Ndlovu announced that this year’s competition will not be restricted to specific categories, giving participants greater freedom to develop solutions across the entire healthcare ecosystem.

“There will be no predefined categories, giving participants the freedom to reimagine healthcare from any perspective or angle. This approach is designed to encourage greater depth, creativity and diversity of ideas across all healthcare domains,” he said.

He challenged innovators to develop solutions that are scalable, technically sound and capable of creating sustainable impact while remaining responsive to local healthcare realities.

Ndlovu also highlighted the growing significance of the Healthathon beyond the competition itself, describing it as a national movement for digital health innovation.

“The Cimas Healthathon has now grown into more than just an event. It has become a national movement for digital health innovation. Our vision is not simply to host a competition, but to build a structured innovation funnel that produces pilot-ready solutions for potential adoption, strategic partnership and further incubation within the healthcare ecosystem,” he said.

The challenge will culminate in a Demo Day on August 28, where shortlisted teams will present their innovations before a panel of judges comprising Cimas Health Group executives, innovation experts and industry leaders.

The winning team will receive US$3,500, while the second and third-placed teams will walk away with US$2,000 and US$1,500 respectively.

However, Ndlovu said the biggest reward for participants could be the opportunity to pilot their solutions with Cimas Health Group and contribute to shaping the future of healthcare in Zimbabwe.

“As Cimas Health Group, we believe collaboration, creativity and technology are essential in driving patient-centred healthcare transformation. Together, we can transform challenges into opportunities, ideas into innovations and innovations into practical solutions that make healthcare smarter, faster and more inclusive,” he said.
