PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared the capsizing of a Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) ferry on Lake Kariba a State of Disaster as the confirmed death toll rose to 44.
The Mbuya Nehanda ferry, which was carrying more than 120 people, overturned on Tuesday while travelling from Kariba to Chalala, near Long Island.
The vessel reportedly capsized after encountering strong waves, triggering a major search-and-rescue operation involving security agencies and local authorities.
In an update issued at 1.30pm on Wednesday, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that 44 bodies had been recovered.
“The ZRP informs the public that the death toll in the Kariba RIDA boat accident is now 44,” police said.
Search and rescue teams were continuing to scour the lake for survivors and those still missing as authorities worked to account for everyone who was on board.
The declaration of a State of Disaster is expected to allow Government to deploy additional resources and strengthen the ongoing emergency response.
Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe said the move would facilitate extraordinary measures to assist those affected by the tragedy.
He said the declaration would allow Government to mobilise the resources required to protect and assist people affected, or likely to be affected, by the disaster.
The Department of Civil Protection activated its emergency response shortly after the ferry capsized.
The operation involves the ZRP Sub-Aqua Unit, the Zimbabwe National Army Boat Squadron, local authorities and other stakeholders working together in the search, rescue and recovery efforts.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the operation continues.
