Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers have arrested a 26-year-old man who rose to notoriety after appearing in a viral social media video allegedly showing him snatching a cellphone from a woman in the Johannesburg CBD.

The suspect was apprehended on Tuesday during an inner-city operation led by the JMPD Tactical Response Unit, following intelligence gathered after the footage circulated widely online.

Police tracked the suspect to a flat in Hillbrow, where he was found hiding on a balcony during a search of the premises. A cellphone believed to be stolen was recovered, which the suspect allegedly failed to account for.

Preliminary investigations have linked the suspect to a series of cellphone snatching incidents across Gauteng. Authorities say he is also connected to the March 2025 hijacking of an off-duty JMPD officer, a case reported at Diepsloot SAPS. Investigators further allege that a Toyota Corolla fitted with cloned registration plates was used during the commission of several of the crimes.

The operation was later expanded after investigators received information pointing to the suspect’s associates. This led to the arrest of three Bangladeshi nationals along Wanderers Street in Johannesburg Central. The trio is suspected to be part of a syndicate involved in the “flushing” of stolen mobile phones, a process used to wipe or reprogram devices before they are resold. Police recovered specialised equipment believed to have been used in the illegal operation.

The main suspect, a Zimbabwean national, was detained at Hillbrow SAPS on a charge of possession of suspected stolen property. The three other suspects were detained at Johannesburg Central SAPS and face similar charges. All four are expected to appear in court soon.

JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca commended the Tactical Response Unit for the swift arrests, describing the breakthrough as a significant step in dismantling organised cellphone theft networks operating in the city.

He said linking the suspect to both the viral cellphone snatching incident and the hijacking of a police officer sent a strong message that there is no hiding place for criminals in Johannesburg. Commissioner Jaca added that investigations are ongoing and more arrests linked to the syndicate are expected.

Police have urged members of the public who may have fallen victim to cellphone snatching incidents involving the suspect to come forward. JMPD also called on residents to remain vigilant and continue reporting suspicious activity as law enforcement intensifies efforts to curb cellphone theft and related crimes in the inner city.
