Chitungwiza Municipality Clarifies Mayor’s Car Purchase

Chitungwiza Municipality has responded to public concerns over the timing and cost of a vehicle purchased for the Mayor, amid widespread debate on social and mainstream media.

Initial reports claimed the Jeep Cherokee was acquired for $147,000. However, investigations reveal the actual cost was $127,500 — a figure formally approved by Cabinet.

“Council received official communication in December 2024 confirming Cabinet authority to procure a condition-of-service vehicle for the Mayor,” said Public Relations Officer Tafadzwa Kachiko. “The acquisition followed due process — from Council resolution to Cabinet approval and procurement.”

Kachiko acknowledged concerns about timing but emphasized that the payment was structured through flexible installments, not a lump sum.

“This prudent financial approach enabled Council to also procure a 37.5-tonne excavator and other service vehicles last year without placing undue strain on resources,” he added.

Despite being cash-strapped, the Municipality says it is committed to improving service delivery in the dormitory town.

“Chitungwiza continues to confront longstanding challenges that predate the current administration,” said Kachiko. “On salaries, Council has made steady progress — reducing the backlog from eight months and remaining fully committed to clearing it entirely.”
