Police in Johannesburg have taken two men in for questioning following a shooting incident at a luxury residence in Hyde Park linked to Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, son of former Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng, the incident left a gardener employed at the property in critical condition after he was shot during circumstances that investigators say are still unclear.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that officers responded to the scene and launched preliminary investigations, with specialised units deployed to comb the property for the firearm allegedly used in the shooting.
Police indicated that two men, aged 33 and 24, were taken into custody for questioning as authorities work to establish what transpired and what may have led to the shooting. By the time of briefing, officers had not yet recovered the firearm but had located a cartridge believed to be linked to the incident. The cartridge will form part of the forensic investigation.
Sources at the scene said police engaged in negotiations with individuals inside the residence before gaining access to conduct their search.
The victim was rushed to hospital and remains in a critical state. Authorities say the suspects are expected to face attempted murder charges pending the outcome of investigations.
Police have not officially named the alleged shooter.
The incident adds to previous controversies surrounding Mugabe while in South Africa. In 2023, he was reportedly implicated in an altercation at a Sandton nightclub, where an assault case was opened. The outcome of that matter was not publicly communicated.
Mugabe has also drawn attention on social media over the years for flaunting luxury vehicles and large sums of cash, triggering public debate about his lifestyle abroad.
Investigations into the Hyde Park shooting are continuing.
