The Avenues Clinic has signalled a bold new phase in its healthcare delivery model, combining infrastructure expansion, specialist training and outcome-focused measurement, as it honoured 63 doctors at its Fifth Doctors Appreciation Cocktail.
The event, attended by medical practitioners, executives and invited guests, went beyond celebration to outline how the hospital is repositioning itself within Zimbabwe’s private healthcare landscape.
General Manager Sibusisiwe Ndhlovu said the institution’s transformation is being driven by both clinician feedback and patient outcomes.
“We are deliberately building systems that support you in delivering the best possible results,” Ndhlovu told the assembled doctors. “Quality care must be supported by quality infrastructure and efficient processes.”
Over the past year, the hospital has upgraded key departments including maternity, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, and private wards. The neonatal intensive care unit has been expanded with additional beds, increasing the facility’s ability to manage premature and high-risk newborns.
Ndhlovu also confirmed that further renovations to theatre complexes and critical care units are imminent, part of a broader modernisation plan aimed at strengthening surgical capacity and intensive care response.
The hospital has introduced a postgraduate palliative care nursing programme, with its first intake underway. The training initiative is designed to enhance holistic patient support, particularly in oncology and other life-limiting conditions.
In a notable strategic shift, The Avenues Clinic is adopting a value-based healthcare framework. Ndhlovu explained that under this model, success is measured by patient-centred indicators such as quality of life, continuity of care and long-term outcomes, rather than cost metrics alone.
She referenced internal case tracking within oncology services which revealed that while survival outcomes may be similar in some instances, variations exist in patient experience and quality of life during treatment.
“That insight is reshaping how we think about care,” she said.
Medical Director Professor Muguti praised the 63 doctors for maintaining clinical excellence during a period of transition and investment. He noted that improved facilities are now better aligned with the level of specialist expertise available at the institution.
The evening featured patient testimonies highlighting experiences in maternity, chronic illness management and emergency care, reinforcing the hospital’s emphasis on coordinated, multidisciplinary treatment pathways.
While the retro-themed celebration brought a nostalgic flair to the occasion, management used the platform to make a clear statement about the future: expanded capacity, enhanced specialist training and structured outcome measurement will define the next chapter for The Avenues Clinic.
