A horrific tragedy has unfolded along the Bulawayo–Beitbridge Highway between Chipangali and the Gwanda tollgate, where a commuter omnibus was engulfed in flames following a suspected explosion, leaving about 18 people feared dead.
The kombi was completely destroyed, reduced to a charred shell, with all occupants believed to have perished in the blaze. Authorities say investigations are still underway to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
Security forces, including the Zimbabwe National Army and the Zimbabwe Republic Police, have been deployed to secure the area and assist with investigations.
The highway has been temporarily blocked as emergency teams work at the scene, with efforts underway to open detours and restore traffic flow. The Daniel Garwe is also at the site monitoring the situation.
Authorities say more details will be released as investigations continue into one of the most devastating road incidents in recent times.
