Matthew Rusike ‘Run for a Child’ Marathon Targets $10K for Orphans’ Needs

Matthew Rusike Children’s Home (MRCH) is set to host the Run for a Child Half Marathon on October 19 at Old Georgians Sports Club in Harare, aiming to raise US$10,000 to support orphans and vulnerable children in its care.

The marathon will feature three race categories: a 21km run starting at 6:00 AM, a 10km race at 6:10 AM, and a 5km fun run at 6:15 AM.

Speaking ahead of the event, MRCH Director Reverend Linrlelink Mutendzwa said the marathon is more than a sporting event it’s a community effort to transform the lives of children through education, care, and mentorship.

“The Run for a Child Half Marathon fundraising initiative will make a lasting difference in the lives of children under our care,” Reverend Mutendzwa said.

Funds raised will go toward completing and furnishing a classroom block for the newly established Matthew Rusike Academy, which has already enrolled its first Grade One class this year.

Participants can register for US$20 via Ecocash merchant code 74930. Tables are also available at US$15 each. Physical registration will take place on October 17 at Trinity MCZ (11:00 AM – 3:00 PM) and Old Georgians Sports Club (5:00 PM – 7:00 PM), and on October 18 at Old Georgians Sports Club.

MRCH currently provides residential care for 100 children and supports over 1,000 children nationwide through outreach programmes. Reverend Mutendzwa said expanding the Matthew Rusike Academy into a junior infant school is a priority, but financial constraints remain a challenge.

“The proceeds from the marathon will accelerate the construction of a two-classroom block, now at roof level,” he said.

He encouraged the public, corporate partners, and well-wishers to participate and bring donations in any form. “All contributions go a long way in bringing joy and smiles to the children,” Reverend Mutendzwa added.

Founded in 1960 in Epworth, the Matthew Rusike Children’s Home was inspired by the work of the late Reverend Matthew Jacha Rusike, who dedicated his life to caring for orphans and vulnerable children. Today, MRCH runs a combination of residential care and community-based initiatives, extending its reach to multiple districts.
