Police say vehicles impounded for traffic offences will now only be released to the legally registered owner, in a bid to improve road safety and enforce accountability.
Speaking during a weekend traffic safety campaign at Mbare Musika, Officer Commanding Harare Province, Commissioner Maxwell Chikunguru, urged motorists to update vehicle ownership details with the Central Vehicle Registry (CVR).
“A number of vehicles are being driven or owned by the fourth or fifth person due to failure to change ownership. This makes it difficult to account for traffic violations,” Comm Chikunguru said.
He warned that if a vehicle is impounded, it will not be released until the official registered owner is identified.
Police say some kombi drivers and other motorists have been unable to collect their vehicles from the Chikurubi Support Unit yard due to outdated ownership records. Others deliberately avoid transferring ownership to facilitate quick resale.
Authorities are urging vehicle buyers to complete the change-of-ownership process to avoid complications in the event of traffic violations or impoundment.
