Govt Tightens Grip on Smuggling, Fake Goods as Over 400 Businesses Prosecuted

Government has intensified its nationwide crackdown on smuggling and unfair trading practices, inspecting 3,779 businesses and securing 419 prosecutions, according to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.

The blitz, conducted in partnership with the Standards Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ), has seen the seizure of 4,816 units of substandard products, many of which were found to be counterfeit groceries sold in tuck shops and vending stalls. A recent survey revealed that nearly half of such goods are fake and pose serious health risks.

Authorities say the ongoing operation targets businesses involved in deceptive practices, including selling counterfeit or underweight goods, using multi-tier pricing, and inadequate labelling.

“To date, a cumulative total of 3,779 businesses have been inspected, with 419 prosecutions finalised and 402 compliance notices issued,” the ministry said in a Wednesday statement, warning that offenders will face full legal consequences under the Consumer Protection Act.

Many consumers have turned to tuck shops for cheaper goods amid economic pressures, but officials say some of these items are smuggled from neighbouring countries such as South Africa and Zambia, while others are produced illegally within Zimbabwe.

The ministry urged the public to remain vigilant and report businesses engaging in unethical practices.
